Born and Raised!"

Q: What is your favorite thing about running?
A: "Running is like therapy for me (and less expensive). The sport of running is meditative; it helps me think through issues clearly. It also keeps me fit, and helps me keep my waistline in check!"

Q: What has been your favorite race, and why?
A: "The 2011 Manhattan Half Marathon. I trained all winter for that race. I ran in sub 10 degree temperatures, I ran in snow, sleet and ice. And what did that get me? A PR of running at a sub 8 minute pace for the race! The training showed me that what you put in, you get out. I learned to run at a consistent pace for 13 miles without too much struggle. It was one of my most enjoyable races!"

Q: What is your motivation to run?
A: "Races of course! I love a challenge. Also, it's a really good lesson for my children when I go out for a training run, some of which I really have no desire to do, but go anyway. 'Why are you going out to run then?' they ask...because I have a goal and in order to obtain in, you have to work hard and be diligent to achieve it. I hope it rubs off on them!"

Q: Favorite indulgence food?
A: "Pizza!"

Q: Favorite guilty pleasure song to run to?
A: "Enter Sandman"

Q: Words to live by?
A: "'It is what it is.' You can't get upset by things you can't help or change. If all you can do is learn from it, make sure you do. Oh, and one more - 'You can do anything you put your mind to.'"

Q: If you could have any supernatural power, what would it be?
A: To instantly get to wherever I want. Yes, I'm impatient, even in my training unfortunately."

Q: If you could be a cartoon character, which one would you be?
A: "That's easy. Roadrunner! You can outrun and outwit your opponents - with a smile!"

Q: What are qualities you admire most in others?
A: "Compassion and sincerity. "

Dana's most recent race was as a member of a 3 person relay team consisting of herself, Sal D'Amico and Reggie Lambert at the Prospect Park Cherry Tree 10 Mile race, where they completed the ten miles in 1:18:07, recording a 7:49/mile pace.

Now you know a little more about Dana - a fierce competitor, a strong runner, and a loyal teammate.

Positive Notes

The Renegade Runners are happy to welcome Shenelle D'Amico as our newest member! Shenelle is the wife of Renegade Sal D'Amico, and is working towards becoming fitter and healthier in 2012 through walking and exercise. We welcome Shenelle, and hope that her first year as a Renegade is fulfilling!

In other news, Sal & Arthur have finalized designs for our official warm up suits that are now available for purchase. The cost is $70, and gets you a zip up hoodie and sweatpants, both displaying the Renegade logo. These are a great addition to our singlets in representing our team, as well as keeping us warm during these colder months. To purchase, contact Arthur (murfya@verizon.net). Uniform orders will be placed once a month, and it takes about a week to receive them after the order has been submitted. Also, uniforms can be personalized with your name or nickname free of charge!

This weekend is the Cherry Tree 10 Miler & 3-Person Relay in Prospect Park. Several team members are participating in the event, and it would be great to have lots of Renegade support! The event begins at Center Drive on the inner loop roadway promptly at 10AM. The Halachic Organ Donor Society (HODS) mission is to save lives by encouraging organ donations from Jewish communities for both Jewish and non-Jewish recipeints. To date, HODS has facilitated over 200 transplants since 2001.

Their race, a 3.5 mile run, is comprised of 2 lower loops of Central Park beginning at 72nd street. The cost is $25 until February 28th, and then increases to $30 until the day before the race. Also, as an added incentive, the person who wins the race (gun time) will receive a round trip ticket to Israel as well as a week in a luxury apartment. The top 3 male & female finishers will receive medals, and the team that raises the most money for the organization (not required to participate) will receive $20 gift certificates for each fundraising member to JackRabbit Running, as well as a lunch at Noi Due.

The second race takes place on March 25th, and is being put on by the Columbia University Road Runners. This will be their 3rd annual Race for Charity, in partnership with Achilles to support disabled atheletes. The 5K starts and finishes in Riverside Park near 108th street. This race is just $10 until March 1st, and includes a race t-shirt! After that, the race increases to only $15...finally, a reasonably-priced 5K in Manhattan.

Both races can be found and registered for on NYC Runs .

Also, as an added reminder: The Cherry Tree 10-Miler is nearing capacity. If you are interested in running this 3-loop race through Prospect Park, it is suggested that you sign up as soon as possible. To register, please follow this link: NYC Runs Cherry Tree 10 Miler. There is also the option to register as a three-person relay for this same race: currently, Dana, Sal and Reggie will be running as a team under the name "Renegade Runners" - any Renegades interested in registering as a team are encouraged to do so, and list their team names as Renegades Runners 2, 3, etc.

At the end of this week, I will be sending around questionnaires to everyone's email addresses. They will just be fun, silly questions in order for your teammates to get to know you a little better (and introduce the newer members to the group at large). If you would like your responses to be featured on the blog, simply reply to me directly with your answers. A picture is always appreciated, too! (Otherwise, I will be forced to delve into the catacombs of Facebook to find one of you - it may be safer to thus send me one of your own choosing!)

Happy Running this week, Renegades.

Sincerely,

Sabrina Martin
Club Secretary

Renegade Runners First Annual Dinner & Awards Ceremony

The First Annual Renegade Runners Dinner & Awards Ceremony took place on Saturday, January 28th at Douglaston Manor. As I noted in my last e-mail, I am stepping down as Secretary as I'll need all the time I can get to be able to obtain all the goals I have set for myself for 2012! However, I will remain active and serve as Social Chair. Going forward please expect to receive Club correspondence from Sabrina. Congrats Officers and we look forward to another year of progress!

Renegade Membership Dues
Membership Dues for 2012 are due. Also, if you sign up as a member before January 31, 2012, run 9 NYRR races before the end of the year and volunteer for 1, you will qualify to run the 2013 NYC marathon. The next NYRR race that is popular among us is the Manhattan Half Marathon scheduled for Saturday, January 21. Registration opens tomorrow.

Club Uniforms
We must all wear Renegade singlets (or designated apparel) to races. (Thank you!) Both Sal and Arthur are working on creating our new Renegade track suit and will bring in a protype at our next meeting.

Renegade Christmas Dinner
Our Annual Renegade Christmas dinner which will be a casual affair at Port Royal Jamaican Restaurant located at 113-09 Sutphin Blvd. will be held on Saturday, December 17 at 7 p.m. Please let me know if you plan to attend. We hope to have all of you attend our first Renegade Awards Ceremony as the Awards Committee (Francois, Maria, Arthur, Dino and myself) are all excited with what we have put together thus far.

Due to the last Saturday of the month landing on New Year's Eve and the Saturday before that landing on Christmas Eve, we will hold our next Club meeting on Saturday, December 17 at 6 p.m. We will head over to the Christmas dinner immediately after.

Best,

Dana

Renegade Runners - October Meeting Re-Cap

Renegades,

This is to provide you with a brief re-cap of last Saturday’s Club meeting.

Club Officer Elections
We had a handful of members in attendance on Saturday (to say the least) due to the freak snow storm that day. Therefore we postponed the Club elections for November’s club meeting. However, please note that due to the time crunch, we will not be able to postpone the elections after November, so please make every effort to attend our next meeting. We were able to determine from those who were in attendance, and were elected for office, that Chairman and Co-Founder should not be on the ballot, Dino Riojas will not accept the nomination for Club President and I, Dana Rosales, will not accept the nomination for Club Vice President. But we thank you. All other names on the nomination listing (attached to the agenda sent around last week) should be considered.

Renegade Club Ledger
We will now be keeping a ledger to keep a detailed recording of monies spent by the Club.

Club Uniforms
We must all wear Renegade singlets (or designated apparel) to races. (Thank you!) We also revisited the purchasing club uniforms (track suits) for existing members. Sal D’Amico mentioned that his brother is a printer and does printing for clubs, sports teams, etc. Arthur and Sal will discuss and details will be provided at our next club meeting.

NYC Marathon Support
If you would like to join the Renegades in supporting myself, Maria, Myrian, Sharon and Edwin during the NYC marathon, you can join them in LIC. They will be stationed a little after mile 14 (between the Citibank building and the 59th street bridge). Most will be heading over to LIC together from Roy Wilkins Park and will depart at 9:30 a.m. For more information you may contact Peanut or Arthur.

Waves Start Time Renegades
Wave 2 10:10 a.m. Dana
Wave 3 10:40 am. Maria, Myrian, Sharon and Edwin (If this is incorrect, please reply to all with the correction)

Pre-Marathon Celebration
This was not discussed during the meeting, but I thought I’d throw it in there. We are planning a marathon celebration/pasta dinner on Friday. Some of us will be heading to the Marathon Opening Ceremony in Central Park which is from 6-8 p.m. for fireworks and live music at the finish line. (The celebration will open at 5 p.m. for bleacher seating – first come first served) We will then head off to our pasta dinner at a restaurant TBD. We’ll confirm no later than tomorrow. If you are interested in joining us, please let me know.

Maria Romano and Claudelle Trotman are now USATF Certified Coaches!
Congrats to you both!

Best,

Dana

Renegade Runners - September Meeting Re-Cap

Renegades,

Below I have provided a recap from our meeting on Saturday, September 24:

Club Elections – We will be holding Club Officer elections during our next meeting. Please consider how you would like to contribute to the Club and whether you would like to run for office or if you have someone in mind to nominate. I have attached the Club bylaws to this e-mail where officer roles are described for your review and consideration.

During our meeting, two Officers announced that they will not be running for re-election. They are the Social Chair and Club Secretary. Yes, I have decided to hand the baton over to someone else in order to pursue other goals for 2012. I would however like to continue to contribute to our Club and will communicate my interests at our next meeting. Therefore, please note the two Officer roles that are currently open for 2012.

We will vote on our 2012 Officers during our meeting in November so that any new Officers may shadow current offices during the month of December.

Renegade Newsletter – Submissions for our next newsletter are due on October 15. Please e-mail Silver with any articles, etc. at silver22banks@yahoo.com. Remember, this newsletter will be a great way to get folks to recognize Renegade Runners as well as bring in new members. Please help contribute to a great issue. If you have any questions on what you can contribute, please e-mail Silver.

Renegade Runners Race Committee – The Club is looking to put on our first race sometime in the Spring of next year. We have formed a race committee to help coordinate and they are as follows: Francios, Maria, Howard and Lenny. If you would like to become a member of this committee, please let me or any of the committee members know. If you have any ideas that you would like to contribute, please contact a committee member.
Note to Committee Members: Please plan to coordinate your first committee meeting for some time this month to stay on schedule for a Spring race.

Charity Events – We had a guest speaker join us during our meeting to announce and talk about the ACQC (Aids Center of Queens County) 1st Annual Join the Fight 5K run/walk race in Cunningham Park on October 23rd. The ACQC is the largest provider of HIV/AIDS services in the Queens. The need for their services has grown and they are in need of help to ensure continued services. Race registration fees and donations will be used toward the continuation of this program. Maria has given her support in helping these folks with the logistics with putting on a race, so let’s show our support as a Club. More information on this race can be found on the pamphlet attached to this e-mail as well as www.jointhefight5k.org

Renegade Holiday Party and Awards Ceremony - We are happy to announce that we will be holding another annual Christmas dinner as well as an Awards Ceremony Dinner-Dance. The Christmas dinner will be a casual affair to be held on Saturday, December 17 (date to be confirmed) at Port Royal Restaurant located at 11309 Sutphin Blvd. Please save the date! More information will be communicated as details are confirmed. Our Awards Ceremony will be held on a Saturday in January (1/7, 1/14, 1/21, or 1/28). We are looking at a number of catering halls, but we will need to set a date to close in on a venue. Please let me know if you have any conflicts with any of these Saturdays as we would like to have as many members as possible attend. More information will be announced as soon as we fine tune these initial details.

We have volunteered/selected members for an awards committee. They are as follows: Francios, Maria, Arthur, Dana.

Renegade Runners Blog
If you haven’t already signed up as a member for our blog, please do so. Just go our website and click on the link, “Blog”. Please note that you’ll need a Gmail or Yahoo account. Once you become a member, please also sign up to contribute. Dino or I will go ahead and grant permission, and then you’re good to go! You can start posting updates! Posts must pertain to the Club as it comes to training (when and where you will be training if you are looking for a running partner(s)), upcoming races, race travel coordination, etc. Proper judgment and discretion must be used when blogging. Currently, if you have any questions regarding the blog, please contact Dino.

Next Club Meeting
Please note that our next Club meeting will be held on Saturday, October 29 at 6 p.m.

In the meantime, please be sure to note the above dates on your calendars.

Best,
Dana

Dana Rosales
Renegade Runners
Club Secretary
danaharrison24@yahoo.com
www.renegaderunners.com

Renegade Runners - August Meeting Re-Cap

Renegades,

During the summer, we had two new members join us. Please welcome Edwin Baimpwi and Sal D'Amico! Please be sure to say hello when you see them on future runs.

Below I have provided a recap from our meeting last Saturday:

Club Communication - Renegade Runners has a blog!
We are always thinking of ways to better improve communication and coordination with members as it comes to training, races, coordination, etc. . Different methods of member communication was discussed, from Twitter, blogs to the old fashion pick up the phone and call someone. As a result, Dino has created a blog on our website! As I myself have no real experience blogging, please be patient and give us some time to start posting updates, etc. It's been a crazy couple of weeks! However, this does not stop club members from contributing. The requirements to contribute to our blog are to be a current member of the Club and have a Gmail account (I believe you can also sign in with a Yahoo account). You will then be granted permission to blog! Remember, posts must pertain to the Club as it comes to training (when and where you will be training if you are looking for a running partner(s)), upcoming races, race travel coordination, etc.) Proper judgment and discretion must be used when blogging! We will properly organize the site as we (I) become more familiar with its capabilities and more instruction/notification will be sent soon. Currently, if you have any questions regarding the blog, please contact Dino.

Annual Club Picnic
Despite the rain, we all had a good time. Unfortunately due to cancellations and the like, we were short monies, which will be reimbursed through the Club's account. Going forward, please note that all Annual Club Picnics will be scheduled for the second Sunday in August, so our next picnic is scheduled for Sunday, August 12, 2012. You may make your payment to Peanut now if you so desire. A list of those who have paid will be maintained.

ING NYC Marathon
For those of you running the NYC marathon this year, the Club will coordinate a morning drop off at 6 a.m. We will meet-up at Roy Wilkens park for pick up at 5:30 a.m. Renegade support can be found at mile 15, so if you need gu, other food, salts, or an article of clothing, remember to give it to a Renegade member who will be supporting us and look to your right at mile 15! We will send out another reminder as we get closer to November 6.

Training
We will continue to meet at 7 p.m. at Roy Wilkins track Mondays - Thursdays. We will be focusing on speed work on Mondays, mile reps on Wednesdays and a 6 mile up tempo on Thursdays. Obviously you do not need to follow this schedule. Join us on the track for a run to suit your own training needs.

We will continue to meet at 6 a.m. for our long runs on Sunday at Alley Pond Park.
